Interiors of the future.
In a project to integrate a head-up display with state-of-the-art technology in a series vehicle, we approached the interdisciplinary areas of design engineering, electronics, software and vehicle construction as closely intertwined elements. To ensure a virtual image is displayed correctly and in the right location in practice, our visual design specialists initially simulated different layouts and define the optimum position for the module in the vehicle. Our CAD engineering team started by carrying out packaging analyses and creating design concepts that were then translated into CAD models for adjustments to the dashboard and body in white, images for the HUD and adjustments to the wire harness. Our specialists’ wide-ranging developments in the fields of electronics and software programming formed the basic tools, enabling us to project HMI content at the correct positions. The final stage of the project involved physically adapting the vehicle and commissioning the new elements in collaboration with the system’s supplier.
Design engineering meets megatrends.
Key future trends, such as autonomous driving, present new challenges for materials technology and design engineering. Self-driving cars not only need to be transparent to certain types of radiation but must also ensure a high level of safety. Passengers will not necessarily have to sit upright and facing the direction of travel in future – a trend which demands new concepts in the fields of materials research and component development. However, the challenges of fully automated vehicles are not limited to materials science alone. The vehicle interiors of the future will require high levels of flexibility and effectively become an additional living space for passengers. For our design engineers, this development opens up new possibilities for vehicle interior design. Considerations for future vehicle interiors include alternative seating positions for working, relaxation and social interactions. In terms of the cockpit, the layout of displays and the dashboard will also change; in future, novel technologies such as eye tracking, gesture control and voice control will play a role in vehicle control.

Future-focused design engineering: as the Head of Interior CAD Engineering, Masoud Abdolvand is involved in designing next-generation automobiles along with his team. “Vehicle interiors are undergoing a transformation. In future, passenger space will become a living space; the trend is towards lifestyle and work environments,” explains Abdolvand.
